Social justice is doing what is right because it is right. It is not by any means a tool to achieve one’s selfish desires. It is an action that not only binds us together, but also shows us a light that can pierce the fog of ignorance. It can range from the grandeur posturing of riling the masses to go against what is wrong or it can also include just speaking out when the time truly calls for it. For me, attending the Greater Lawndale School for Social Justice was a breath of fresh air. I have been introduced to so many people and ideas. It has allowed me to grow from the absent minded shut in that I use to be. I have been given this chance to not only speak my mind, but also to make a difference in the lives of those I love. It can also be said about everyone else who has not only joined together to save those who are precious to us, but also to band together as a family even when the odds are against. It is time and time again that I am surprised by what the staff and alumni have done to get their points across. Staff who have crossed the border of educator to enter in as family. Alumni willing to lend a hand no matter of race, age, or gender.
We face many obstacles when searching for a solution. It stems from the opponents themselves trying to block our path with false knowledge in an attempt to steer us away from the truth. Also, there are the many who have accepted these false truths, and try to convince others to conform. But their one obstacle that rivals the rest and has no equal, that individual is you. If you don’t believe that you can have a fighting chance then you have already lost. For me I am always my worst enemy since I am never in the present moment and just wish to live life day by day with no worries. But then I see my friends who fight each day just to be best or to make the next day a brighter day than the one before. I see the anguish of those who can barely feed themselves. That is when I am reminded of all that I am grateful. But I then find it in myself the reason to fight not for myself, but the people who which I have grown to love.
The struggle is facing adversity with a smile. Because even though the situation looks meager we still have the passion to keep moving forwards. We achieve this by first convincing ourselves that what we are fighting for is worth it. We then band together with those who share our passion. Then the rest will follow. For those who will continue to strive for social justice will do just that. I see this people to be those who are worthy of being followed. They will not only bring change they themselves will be change. I have been lucky enough to be with people who voice can stay strong even after they have finished talking. For example Vanessa Mora. She has the determination that few have truly experienced. I see that she has the will to continue moving forward which has inspired me to do the same. As for another student Michelle Romo has an aura that is hard to miss. She has a presence which demands your attention, and a voice that can convey it as well. What these two have in common is they are strong individuals yet they can make the people around strong as well. The followers will soon become leaders and then the cycle will continue.
I see myself supporting those who truly need it the most. I will fight alongside those who are equally as passionate. My fire is everyone’s fire. When the people I care about need me the most is when I shine the brightest. I will work to strive not only for myself but for the people I love.
